I brought the sword up and took a defensive stance, jabbing at the wolves as they got close. The speed with which they moved seemed impossible, and before my blade could strike them, they dodged to the side or crouched low, avoiding my aim.

I had to remind myself that they weren’t real wolves, but demons in disguise. This was their realm, and I was at a disadvantage. I leaped backward as one of the wolves slipped past my sword and tried to snap its jaws onto my ankle. Its teeth gleamed unnaturally white, and its hackles were raised.

The blade suddenly overpowered me, guiding my movements. It was as if I had lost control of my body and someone else had taken over. I twirled in a circle and brought the sword down in a powerful chop. It glowed brighter the nearer it was to the demons, and as it cleaved through the head of the one snapping at me, its flare temporarily blinded me.

Unlike being in my body, blinking wasn’t something I could do. Instead, the glow eventually faded enough for me to see again. The wolf demon I’d struck lay unmoving on the ground. There was no blood, and no bones showed under the damaged flesh. The inky form of the demon was simply dead. Within moments, it dematerialized and was gone.

I turned my attention to the other wolf. It shifted its glowing red eyes back and forth from me to where its dead ally had been. It howled and then bounded off, fleeing. Not knowing how demons interacted with one another, I decided to keep going. If the wolf was going to get its friends, I didn’t want to be here when it returned.

The wall that surrounded the Citadel was too tall to scale, but as I thought about getting over it, my spirit body moved to obey. I flew through the air and over the wall, landing in the courtyard of the Citadel. Nemryth had been correct. Everything seemed identical to the realm of the living, and I easily navigated my way down into the stable.

I wanted to catch the enenra by surprise, and since I knew of the secret passages and hidden rooms within the school, I felt I had the advantage. It also helped that the creature didn’t know I was coming for it.

Maren is asking Demris if I’m able to speak with you.

Say yes, I replied.

I already did. He says that you need to hurry. Nemryth thinks Kage is going to leave the Citadel soon.

I’m in the stable now. Why does Nemryth think he’s going to leave?

There was a pause. I levitated up the hidden entrance into the women’s bathing chamber, staring at the shadows until I was certain they didn’t conceal any demons.

She says that he’s not found the dragon stone, and he grows irritated. She’s afraid he may give up the search and start seeking out the surviving riders.

Where in the Citadel is Kage? I’d rather not run around blindly looking for him.
